Evaluation of foam properties of saponin from Ilex paraguariensis A. St. Hil. (Aquifoliaceae) fruits BJPS
Canto,Gizele Scotti do; Treter,Janine; Yang,Samanta; Borré,Gustavo Luís; Peixoto,Maria Paula Garofo; Ortega,George González.
Saponins are natural compounds able to form abundant foam, a desirable quality required in some chemical, foods, cosmetic and pharmaceutical processes. Ilex paraguariensis A. St. Hil. (Aquifoliaceae) known as mate, is a South American widely cultivated specie due to the preparation of a tea-like beverage from its leaves. Moreover, its green fruits are a rich source of non-toxic and very low haemolytic saponins. In this study, mate saponin fraction (MSF) was evaluated as a foam former, focusing on its foamability, foam lifetime, and film drainage in the presence of different electrolytes (ionic strength I = 0.024 M). Sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and polysorbate 80 (Poly-80) were used as reference surfactants. The critical micelle concentration (CMC), the...

Flora arbórea da bacia do rio Tibagi (Paraná, Brasil): Celastrales sensu Cronquist Acta Botanica
Viani,Ricardo Augusto Gorne; Vieira,Ana Odete Santos.

Optimal culture conditions for the initial development of Ilex paraguariensis A.St.-Hil. explants Acta Botanica
Griebeler,Ana Gláucia; Consatti,Guilherme; Freitas,Elisete Maria de; Sperotto,Raul Antonio.
In the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil.) is an economically and culturally important species. Because of the difficulty in obtaining plantlets from seeds, micropropagation has emerged as an alternative that could increase production. This work aimed to evaluate the effect that treatment with 6-benzyladenine (BA), at concentrations of 2.2, 8.9, and 20 µM and associated with naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA, 0.5 µM), has on the in vitro growth and leaf emission of I. paraguariensis nodal segments cultivated in 0.5 X Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium or 0.5 X Woody Plant Medium (WPM). The most efficient treatment was MS medium with 8.9 µM BA+NAA, in which I. paraguariensis presented greater shoot elongation and higher...

Populational Diversity on Leaf Morphology of Maté (Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil., Aquifoliaceae) BABT
Coelho,Geraldo Ceni; Mariath,Jorge Ernesto de Araujo; Schenkel,Eloir Paulo.
Maté (Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil.) is a native plant from southern Brazil and a raw material for beverages. To research on population variability of the species, we compared leaf morphology of three populations from Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), Paraná (PR) and Santa Catarina (SC) States. Lamina measurements included area (A), perimeter (P), length (l), maximum width (w), distance between maximum width and lamina base (dw), base angle (BÂ), biomass (m), and the indexes: relative distance of maximum width (dw/l), ratio length/width (l/w), relative perimeter (RP= P / (l + w), rectangular area index (RAI = A / (l x w)) and leaf mass/area (m/A). We verified differences among populations on A (MS<PR=SC), l (MS<PR=SC), w (MS<PR=SC), RAI (MS=PR>SC) and...

Storage substances in the androgametogenesis and mature pollen grain of Ilex paraguariensis St. Hil. (Aquifoliaceae) Rev. Bras. Bot.
SANTOS,RINALDO PIRES DOS; MARIATH,JORGE ERNESTO DE ARAUJO.
Storage substances such as starch grains, proteins and lipids were studied during the male gametogenesis and in the mature pollen grain of Ilex paraguariensis St. Hil. (Aquifoliaceae). There are two cycles of amylogenesis and amylolyse. The first cycle lasts until the vacuolated stage when the starch is hydrolyzed and amorphous proteins are stored inside the single vacuole. The next cycle begins after mitosis with the formation of the vegetative and generative cells. At this point, the young vegetative cell stores many starch grains that are bigger than in the first cycle. During the maturation of the male gametophyte, the starch is hydrolyzed and it is absent in the mature pollen grain. Small lipid droplets surround the young generative cell after the...
